Teen online safety

Nudge

Stay aware, stay safe.

Signals-based detection, in-moment teen coaching, and playbooks for trusted adults — without surveillance.

  • Signals, not surveillance — behavioral patterns, not contacts, photos, or location.
  • A calm pause for teens, right in the moment it matters.
  • A clear playbook for the trusted adults teens choose.

Signals-based, not surveillance-first. Built for families. Grounded in trust.

The moment that matters

A real problem happens before families have time to think clearly.

When a teen is panicked and ashamed, rules and monitoring do not help in time. Families need a product that supports disclosure instead of replacing it.

What parents recognize immediately

  • After midnight, a parent gets one word: "Mom."
  • A teen is being sextorted. The hardest part is not tech — it is panic and shame.
  • Predators use repeatable patterns: secrecy, urgency, isolation, and escalation.
  • The gap is not another surveillance feed. It is a calm pause inside the moment.

Nudge is built for that exact moment

  • Runs quietly in the background to detect red-flag patterns early.
  • Coaches the teen with low-shame language, next steps, and options for help.
  • Alerts a trusted adult with the flag type, severity, and a calm response script.
  • Keeps communication open — because trust is what changes outcomes.

The problem

Most teen safety tools create surveillance, not safety.

Watching everything erodes trust and teaches teens to hide. Real safety comes from detecting genuine risk, coaching in the moment, and giving adults something to actually do.

What tools today do

  • Monitor every message, photo, and search for flagged keywords
  • Send raw activity feeds to parents — context stripped out
  • Create false positives that erode trust without real benefit
  • Treat teens as subjects to be watched, not people to be protected

What actually matters

  • Detecting behavioral patterns that signal real risk
  • Coaching teens in the moment — before a situation escalates
  • Giving adults a clear, actionable response, not just an alert
  • Protecting privacy while still protecting the person

The false tradeoff

Parents are stuck between surveillance and silence.

Neither produces durable safety. Nudge is designed for trust, disclosure, and privacy constraints from the start.

Why the usual options fail

  • Online exploitation often follows the same manipulation patterns as offline abuse, but families rarely get an early signal and a usable playbook.
  • Monitoring-first products can erode trust, drive avoidance, and reduce disclosure right when it matters most.
  • Privacy constraints, including COPPA-aware product design, limit what responsible products should collect.

What changes outcomes

  • Teens ask for help earlier.
  • Parents respond calmly with clear next steps.
  • Signals stay stable even as apps and tactics change.
  • Safety skills carry beyond a single platform.

“The best way to keep teens safe is to empower them with the tools, language and support to keep themselves safe.”

Jes Daigle, Founder

Nudge's approach

Signals over noise. Trust over surveillance.

Three things working together — detection, coaching, and guidance.

Detection layer

Signals, not surveillance

Nudge reads behavioral patterns — not contacts, photos, or location. It looks for manipulation, threats, grooming behaviors, and pressure — not flagged words.

Teen layer

Coaching for teens

When a concerning pattern fires, Nudge gives the teen a calm pause — safety education and guided options — before anything is sent to a parent.

Parent layer

Playbooks for adults

When a trusted adult needs to step in, Nudge tells them what to do next — concrete steps that protect the relationship, not just the moment.

Detection

What Nudge looks at — and what it ignores.

Abuse follows repeatable patterns across every platform. That makes a signals-based model more durable — and far less invasive — than filtering content.

Nudge detects

  • Manipulation, grooming patterns, and coercive control
  • Threats and pressure to meet in person
  • Requests for private photos or personal information

Nudge never sees

  • Your contacts or who you talk to
  • Location, photos, videos, or files, passwords or accounts

Only message content is analyzed. All other device data remains private.

How Nudge Works — what we detect and what we do not access
Examples of red flags — risk types Nudge watches for

Detection, continued

Nudge reads the conversation, not just the message.

A single line rarely tells the whole story. When tone shifts and requests escalate across several messages, Nudge groups and tracks that pattern as one escalating thread — so both the teen and the trusted adult get guidance scaled to the fuller picture.

The teen sees the pattern build

Risky chats rarely start scary — they begin friendly and slowly shift. Nudge shows how a conversation changed over time so spotting it early becomes a skill.

Nudge history showing how a conversation escalated over time

The adult gets the full thread — and a playbook

The trusted adult sees the escalation as one alert, with severity and concrete next steps — the same clear playbook as any other alert.

Data retention

We keep only what safety requires — and only for as long as it helps.

Retention scales with risk, nothing more. Low-risk moments leave no trace; higher-risk signals are held just long enough for a trusted adult to act — then deleted automatically.

How long Nudge retains a signal and its context by risk level, and why
Risk levelRetentionWhy
Low risk0 daysNo retention. Nothing is stored — the moment passes and leaves no record.
Medium risk30 daysHeld briefly so a trusted adult can review context and follow up, then deleted.
High risk90 daysKept long enough to support a sustained response and any needed reporting.
Imminent danger120 daysThe longest window, reserved for the most serious situations where safety outcomes may still be unfolding.

Retention applies only to the signal and its context — never your contacts, location, photos, or passwords. When a window ends, the data is deleted automatically.

Teen layer

A calm pause, not a panic button.

When a signal fires, Nudge reaches the teen first.

  • Safety education in plain language, surfaced in the moment
  • Guided options for how to respond — block, report, ask for help
  • Medium and high-risk alerts automatically notify a trusted adult
“When something feels off, your brain races. Nudge gives you that important pause to think clearly and make safer choices.”

When a teen is struggling

If the signal is self-harm, support comes first.

Nudge meets the teen with warmth — not an alarm — and surfaces free, confidential crisis resources right away: the Crisis Text Line and the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, alongside the option to reach a trusted adult.

A gentle heads-up

“You didn't do anything wrong.”

Most moments aren't a crisis — they're a chance to learn. Nudge opens with reassurance, then explains what caught its attention in plain language: an age gap, a request to keep secrets, pressure to share, or a money ask. No lecture, no blame.

  • Names the specific patterns worth pausing on
  • Offers “Talk to a Trusted Adult” — or “I'm okay, thanks”

Parent layer

Not just an alert. A playbook for what comes next.

Every alert arrives with context and a clear response path.

Medium RiskThreats · Pressure to Meet

“Someone online is harassing me and I'm scared.”

What to do now

  • Do not engage or pay. Save evidence, block the sender.
  • Report the account to the platform.

Why it matters

Surveillance breeds secrecy. Coaching builds trust.

Every tool that watches without coaching teaches teens to hide more carefully. Nudge is built on the opposite premise: a teen who feels supported is safer than one who feels surveilled.

For teens

“I get support in the moment — and I know what's happening when it matters.”

For parents

“I know what's happening and I know how to respond without making it worse.”

Built for families

One household. Every teen. Skills that stick.

Manage protections and trusted adults for each child in one place — without turning the teen experience into a punishment flow. And because Nudge is pattern-based, short lessons build instincts that carry across platforms, online and off.

  • Multiple child profiles and the trusted adults each teen chooses
  • Riskiest-platforms view across your teens, ranked by high-risk detections
  • Guided safety lessons on privacy, boundaries, and healthy relationships
